How it Works
Acupuncture is an ancient medicine based on millennia of recorded observation. It works through multiple mechanisms to effect healing. Acupuncture needles are used to stimulate the body’s own healing response in damaged tissue and to course correct when body processes have gone awry. Diagnosis is made by observing how the body currently functions, such as pulse taking, examination of the tongue, hands-on palpation and by taking detailed holistic health history. Treatments with Evan take the entire person, not just the symptom, into account.
In addition to the tools below Evan utilizes time to talk to address your specific health concerns and craft a treatment plan just as unique as you are.
An appointment looks like…
Treatment starts with a quick phone chat with Evan to prepare for your visit and answer any questions.
The first visit is an intake appointment which lasts 1.5 - 2 hours and includes treatment. A thorough and holistic health history is taken, current symptoms are evaluated and a treatment plan, which can include any of the tools below, is created and started together.
Weekly or bi-weekly follow-up visits are about 60 minutes and include honing of diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment Tools
Acupuncture
During acupuncture small sterile filiform needles are inserted into the skin at specific points to stimulate body systems. Needles are the most common tool used during treatment to move pain, to tap into deeper self knowledge and strength, and to release pathogens to the exterior.
In some cases electrical stimulation increases the potency of needling.
Moxabustion
Moxa is burning dried mugwort close to the skin to build blood, warm cold regions, smooth the movement of joints and dispel pathogens. It’s a special favorite of newly postpartum mothers.
Cupping
Small glass or plastic cups adhere to the body with suction to draw out pathogens, smooth muscles that are knotted, and relieve pain. It is used for a wide a variety of treatments including deep coughs and sore muscles.
Tuina
Tunia is therapeutic massage that works in tandem with needle work. It’s often used to help relax and prepare the body for deeper work.
Topicals
Herbal salves based on Chinese medicine can help relieve pain during and after treatments.
